Cost savings for small, two-layer PCB designs: Nordic Bluetooth 5.2 SoC at Rutronik

by donpedro

The nRF52805 System-on-Chip (SoC) complements the nRF52 series with a cost-effective SoC in a WLCSP optimized for small two-layer PCB designs. Previously, small designs required fourlayer PCBs, which are significantly more expensive. The SoC is available at https://www.rutronik24.de.

The nRF52805 is equipped with an Arm® Cortex® M4 processor that is clocked at 64 MHz. It has 192 KB Flash and 24 KB RAM and integrates a number of analog and digital interfaces such as a 2-channel 12-bit ADC, SPI, UART and TWI.

Fast data transmission and reduction of interference
It supports Bluetooth Low Energy and proprietary 2.4 GHz protocols. Data is transferred faster and more efficiently due to the possible Bluetooth high throughput of 2 Mbps. In addition, the Bluetooth Channel Selection Algorithm No. 2 (CSA No. 2) reduces interference and improves coexistence. The radio module has a transmission power of up to 4 dBm and a sensitivity of -97 dBm (1 Mbit/s Bluetooth LE).

Nordics smallest package for two-layer PCB designs
With WLCSP dimensions of only 2.48 × 2.46 mm, the nRF52805 suits ideally for use with beacons, disposable medical devices (e.g. ingestible diagnostic devices), sensors, styluses and presenters.

In addition, Nordic offers a 9.5 × 8.8 mm reference layout with all ten available GPIOs (= General Purpose Input/Output), requiring only ten external passive components (including two quartz load capacitors).

SoftDevice S112 and S113 support the nRF52805. These are memory optimized, pure peripheral devices with Bluetooth Low Energy protocol stacks, which simultaneously serve up to four connections with a broadcaster.
