Now available at Rutronik: the nRF52840 from Nordic

by donpedro

The nRF52840 from Nordic Semiconductor is in mass production and available at www.Rutronik24.com. The advanced multi-protocol SoC for ultra-low-power wireless applications comes with an integrated 2.4GHz transceiver that supports Bluetooth 5, ANT, Zigbee, Thread and proprietary 2.4GHz protocols.

Core of the SoC is a 32-Bit ARM® Cortex™-M4F CPU running at 64 MHz. The CPU supports DSP instructions, HW accelerated Floating Point Unit (FPU) calculations, single-cycle multiply and accumulate, and hardware divide for energy-efficient processing. With an on-chip memory in both flash (1MB) and RAM (256kB), the nRF52840 offers enhanced capacities for the use of several radio protocols simultaneously, as well as more complex customer applications. It is on-air compatible with nRF24 Series, nRF51 Series, and nRF52 Series products from Nordic Semiconductor, so customers‘ existing end products can also communicate with the new chip without any problems.

The multiprotocol 2.4GHz radio supports Bluetooth low energy 2Mbps and 1Mbps, 500kbps and 125kbps, ANT, ZigBee, Thread and proprietary 2.4GHz protocols. The SoC also comes with high-resolution RSSI measurement and automated functions to reduce CPU-load like EasyDMA for direct memory access for packet data and assembly. To keep the consumption as low as possible, all peripherals have independent and automated clock and power management to ensure they are powered down when not required for task operation. The supply range between 1.7V and 5.5V enables the direct connection of coin cells or a USB power supply without external voltage regulators.

For enhanced security, the SoC nRF52840 implements the ARM® CryptoCell-310. This on-chip cryptographic co-processor incorporates a true random number generator (TRNG) and supports a wide range of asymmetric, symmetric and hashing cryptographic services for secure applications. The co-processor speeds up operations significantly, saves CPU processing time and reduces energy consumption. Therefore, the nRF52840 is perfectly suited for trustworthy applications with robust industry grade levels of security.

Furthermore, the nRF52840 supports USB 2.0 and enables with an on-chip NFC-tag a range of new applications like NFC payment and Out-of-Band (OOB) pairing. This feature simplifies the process of authenticated pairing between two Bluetooth devices significantly and improves the user experience. Potential applications include wearables, virtual/augmented reality systems, smart sensor networks, HID controllers, IoT-networks, smart lighting networks, smart door locks and connected white goods. The nRF52840 comes with the S140 SoftDevice, a Bluetooth 5 prequalified Bluetooth LE protocol stack. A THREAD-stack is available for the IEEE802.15.4 transceiver. Other protocols such as ANT, Gazel or Shock-Burst are also available free of charge. The SoC is available in a 7×7mm AQFN package with 73 pins and 48 GPIO contacts at www.rutronik24.com.
