SECO enables age verification via Bankomat®Karten at vending machines in Austria

This functionality offers a streamlined and efficient solution for businesses operating vending machines that sell age-restricted products.
Age verification is a critical process that ensure age-restricted products are only accessed by individuals of appropriate age, as required by law. The solution for age verification involves scanning official identification documents, which necessitates separate steps for verification and payment.
The SECO’s KarL4 payment terminal simplifies this process by enabling age verification directly through a payment card, eliminating the need for physical ID checks.
By integrating age verification via Bankomat®Karten into its KarL4 contactless card reader, SECO provides a solution that allows vending machine operators in Austria to perform both age verification and payment with a single tap of a card. The verification process occurs through the NFC chip on the card, ensuring a contactless and efficient purchasing experience. Importantly, no personal data is retained during this process, ensuring the privacy and security of the user.
KarL4 terminal
Age verification with the KarL4 terminal is already well-established in Germany, where it has been successfully implemented for cigarette machines via the German debit card, girocard. Now available in Austria, the solution can be adapted for a wide range of vending machines selling various age-restricted products. A key advantage of the KarL4 payment terminal is its flexibility: it can be retrofitted onto existing vending machines without additional mounting work, offering a cost-effective solution for both legacy and new devices. It is also suitable for outdoor applications and can be provided as a highly integrated system with a human-machine interface (HMI).
The age verification feature integrated with the KarL4 device is part of SECO’s comprehensive solution for the vending market.
