Affordable Modbus displays for your PLC

by Electronica Azi

DISPLAY VISIONS is offering its new EA-HMI series of displays for the straightforward connection of operator interfaces to programmable logic controllers (PLCs). These bright, brilliant displays feature touch panels, making them ideally suitable for remote access.

These days, almost every PLC offers a Modbus interface. Cost-effective HMI units for this purpose are now available in five practical sizes ranging from 2.8” to 12”. Thanks to the standardised Modbus protocol, they are ready for immediate use. Application-specific screen layouts can be easily configured using drag-and-drop; DISPLAY VISIONS provides the free “HMI Designer” software tool for this purpose. This software operates on the intuitive WYSIWYG principle (“what you see is what you get”), and is compatible with any Windows PC. This enables customers to quickly and easily link the requisite Modbus registers with the corresponding virtual display elements to display selected data on the screen. Screen pages, text, numbers, bar charts, images and more can be freely assigned to any Modbus register. Supported data types include Coil, Discrete, Input and Holding data types. 32-bit float values can be transmitted for floating point calculations.

Flexible Modbus Connectivity and High-Visibility Displays

The displays can be configured as either a server (slave) or a client (master). This enables small applications to operate entirely without a PLC, as one or more sensors can be connected directly.

The data communication takes place via RS-485 (Modbus RTU) or via LAN/WiFi (Modbus TCP). Support is provided for virtually all standard PLC models, including products from Allen Bradley, Beckhoff, Mitsubishi, Rockwell, Schneider Electric, and Siemens – to name just a few.

With their high degree of brightness (typically 1000 cd/m2) and exceptionally wide viewing angle of nearly 180°, measured values, status indicators and graphics remain clearly legible in strong ambient light or from varying viewing angles – an advantage in production halls, machine environments or outdoor installations.

The EA-HMI series thus offers a cost-effective solution for display and control in mechanical and plant engineering, building automation and OEM applications that require a reliable and easily integrated HMI interface.
