Moxa Inc. announced that its NPort 6000-G2 Series has become the world’s first serial device server to achieve the IEC 62443-4-2 Security Level 2 certification under the IECEE Certification Body scheme. This achievement reflects Moxa’s long-term commitment to secure serial connectivity in modern industrial networks.
Securing legacy serial infrastructure in increasingly connected industrial OT environments
Serial field devices will remain in operation across industrial OT environments for many years. As industries accelerate digitalization, the convergence of IT and OT networks has exposed these critical operational assets to new cyberthreats. Many of these assets still rely on serial protocols such as RS-232, RS-422, and RS-485. While these protocols remain proven and widely used in industrial environments, they were originally designed for reliability and interoperability rather than cybersecurity. As a result, serial field devices can become vulnerable when connected to today’s increasingly networked OT environments.
Moxa designed its new serial connectivity portfolio with cybersecurity as a core requirement. The NPort 6000-G2 Series is one of the new portfolio series which acts as a critical security gatekeeper for edge assets such as PLCs, meters, and consoles, enabling asset owners and operators to extend the life of installed serial infrastructure while supporting stricter cybersecurity requirements.
The launch broadens Moxa’s defense-in-depth coverage across the automation pyramid. The NPort 6000-G2 Series addresses secure serial connectivity at the field level, while the EDS-G4000 Series and EDR-G9010 Series support secure networking, segmentation, and traffic protection across control and supervisory layers. At higher levels of the architecture, the UC Series industrial computers provide a secure platform for computing and system integration.
Validating Security at the Foundation
Bureau Veritas (BV),a global testing, inspection, and certification organization, officially validated this achievement. It confirms the NPort 6000-G2 Series meets the strict technical security requirements for components in Industrial Automation and Control Systems (IACS).
Comments
“We are honored to witness Moxa achieving the world’s first IEC 62443-4-2 certification for a serial device server,” said David Hsueh, Cyber Director of Technology Products Taiwan at Bureau Veritas. “Recent threat intelligence findings reinforce a key principle: modern cyber risks often originate from overlooked components closest to day-to-day operations. Protecting only the core infrastructure is insufficient if edge devices remain exposed. Moxa supports the industry in addressing this critical gap by continuously enhancing the security of edge devices such as the NPort 6000-G2 Series. For industrial buyers, selecting secure-by-design products is no longer merely a compliance option—it is a fundamental requirement for diligent operational security.”
A Long-term Commitment to Serial Connectivity
For more than 35 years, Moxa has supported serial connectivity in industrial applications worldwide. “Our commitment to serial connectivity has never wavered. For decades, we have focused on getting devices connected, and today, our dedication has expanded to keeping them connected securely,” said Casper Yang, Vice President, Product Business Group at Moxa. And so on: “As serial devices remain essential in industrial operations, they also face growing cybersecurity challenges. This certification reflects our ongoing commitment to helping customers strengthen edge security while extending the life and value of their trusted infrastructure.”
