Fairchild Semiconductor introduces three new Fairchild Power Switch (FPS) products featuring burst mode operation for stand-by mode (under 0.1W @ 265Vac) that meets the International Energy Agency’s (IEA) “1-Watt Initiative” aimed at reducing stand-by power losses to below 1 Watt. The FSD200, FSD210, and FSDM311 significantly reduce bill of material costs while achieving high-efficiency and obtaining regulatory compliance. The unique integration of each of these FPS products minimizes external components, simplifies designs, and lowers costs in target applications, such as battery chargers and adapters, mobile phones, PDAs, MP3s, C-TVs, monitors and PC auxiliary power. These highly integrated off-line power switches combine a fully avalanche-rated SenseFET (LDMOS) for current sensing (650V or 700V minimum breakdown ratings) with a voltage mode PWM IC, and they are equipped with a built-in start-up switch, eliminating the need for an external start-up resistor. The FSD200 also eliminates the transformer auxiliary winding. The Fairchild Power Switch products are self-biased and protected, linear control current-to-duty cycle converters with open drain output. They operate from 6.7V to 21V at a frequency of 134kHz with frequency modulation for low EMI. Additional features include internal soft start to reduce the overshoot current at plug in, overload protection, over current protection and internal thermal shutdown protection. Both the FSD200 and FSD210 are available in 7-DIP packages while the FDSM311 is available in an 8-DIP package. Beginning 2004, these products will be available in lead-free packaging that meets or exceeds the requirements of the joint IPC/JEDEC standard J-STD-020B and is compliant with the European Union requirements.
